As the oldest professional outdoor theatre in Britian, we have been presenting Shakespeare plays for over 75 years. Each year 10,000 school children enjoy a production here. For many it is their first experience of Shakespeare. When you take away the ceiling and walls of a theatre the traditionally perceived barriers seem to melt away too. The audience can see the actors but, as in Shakespeare's time, the opposite is also true. The relaxed yet engaging atmosphere of the Open Air Theatre provides the ideal environment for children to enjoy an unforgettable experience.

The 2008 Season includes two exciting developments for the Open Air Theatre. Firstly, we are creating a new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream especially for children aged 7 - 11. Secondly, we are delivering education workshops for both primary and secondary schools in association with the Young Shakespeare Company who have over twenty years experience of working with schools.
